The current building stands on the site of the former monastery of Santa Margherita, founded by the Umiliati family in the 13th century and occupied by the nuns of the order. In 1469 a new church dedicated to the saints Margherita and Caterina came to occupy the place of the medieval oratory. The monastery is famous for the story of Marianna de Leyva (1575-1650), the Gertrude, monk of Monza of the Promessi Sposi.
